The best antivirus programs 2019 for Android

The Magdeburg AV-Test Institute has tested 20 protection solutions for Android. With the new scoring process, twelve security apps have reached full scores and Google Play Protect is back in the lead.

In July 19, the AV-Test Institute tested mobile protection solutions for Android devices that their manufacturers had submitted for certification. For comparison, the Magdeburg again tested Google Play Protect.

SecuriON OnAV and Antiy AVL Sec have joined the previous test two months ago. Quick Heal and INet Cop have been dropped. The rest of the test field remained unchanged except for version changes.

The test results
The minimum requirements for a certificate, other than Google Play Protect, have met all tested apps. Google's automatic app scan has clearly missed the class target again in both protection tests. In the case of the pests, which are up to four weeks old, Protect has detected just under 55 percent, in the real-time test even only 44 percent. On Google Play Protect alone, you should not rely better - the protective effect is hardly enough for a "better than nothing".

The full 18 points have reached twelve test candidates. A total of 16 apps scored a total of six points in terms of protection, and in the Speed category even all, at least 13. Apps that do not at least get full points for protection against malware are not recommended - after all, there is plenty of choice ,

In the real-time test, the average malware detection rate is 96.8 percent, without Google Play Protect it would even be 99.6 percent. In the second test section with up to four weeks old malware, the average is 97.6 percent, without Google Play Protect at just 99.9 percent. Apart from the last four items in the spreadsheet (Google, securiON, NSHC, F-Secure), all apps score at least 99.8 percent in both subtests. At speed, everyone is at a similar level and does not bother.

False alarm
In the Usability category, only false alarms now count. Overall, there have been very few misdiagnoses. Google Play Protect is clearly in the lead, but has improved dramatically with only eight false positives compared to the previous test. In May, Google's app scanner had delivered more than 1000 misdiagnoses. The current eight false positives concern apps that are not from the Google Play Store. Some apps have produced one to two false positives, 13 apps have passed all tests without triggering false alarms.

featured
Some significant differences exist in the functionality of the security apps, which is no longer rated. The range of additional features ranges from NSHC Droid-X, which offers only rooting detection, to Avast and AVG , which offer almost everything a heart desires besides a backup function. Many apps have anti-theft features on board, so they can locate, lock and / or erase all data in case of loss. Also quite common is a web filter that blocks, or at least warns, access to dubious or dangerous websites.

Some of the free installable apps you'll find on Google Play are stripped-down versions of the paid solution and advertise for it. If you want to use one or the other additional function permanently, you can usually switch to the premium version via in-app purchase. The detailed test results with information on the scope of functions can be found on the website of the AV-Test Institute .

In the results table we weighted the points from the individual categories differently, as with the Windows tests. The protective effect is 50 percent in the overall score, the other two categories of 25 percent (2: 1: 1). These scores can be found in the last column, after which the table is also sorted. In the penultimate column are the points without this weighting (1: 1: 1), as calculated by AV-Test.
